There was a time, not long ago, when the local 'cross scene wasn't the glamorous darling of Colorado cycling. It was a time when few people showed up to spectate, and racers couldn't really count on such luxuries as beer feeds, dollar hand-ups or food vendors, let alone multiple online photo galleries dedicated to each race for Monday morning ogling. In many ways, Saturday's Schoolyard 'Cross race was a return to the days of yore.
It could have been the location--Brighton, CO is essentially West Kansas for any true dyed-in-the-technical-wear Boulderite. It could also have been the post-Boulder Cup hangover, because it's tough to top last weekend. In any case, the four of us were out in the bumpy prairie grass, scrapping for points at a race that was decidedly old-school. Maybe that suits us, because, as a team, we had our best race to date. Jesse, Spencer and Scott were all in the top-ten, and Grant held his own but just missed out on top-20. Days like this remind us how far the local 'cross scene has progressed, but they also prove that all you really need is a good field of racers and 60 minutes of time.
