Seasons have their ebb and flow, ranging from the beginning's anticipation to the weariness one feels when it's time to move on. Much like a nice glass of beer, it's a spectrum of sensations and feelings start to finish, but really, in almost any case, when you hit that sweet spot in the middle, when it's familiar but not tired, you find the zenith of enjoyment. If got out on a bike in Boulder today, you probably got that feeling. We are heading into the best part of autumn, and that just happens to coincide with some of the finest local 'cross races.
Although last weekend was a bit unseasonably warm, it still captured that feeling you get in the heat of the season. Between Saturday's Blue Sky Cup and Sunday's DBC Events Monarch 'Cross, we had two of the best promoters and events around. The squad was in full effect, with only Scott missing--he was off throwing 'bows with the big boys at Spooky 'Cross in L.A. Grant suffered a flat tire on Saturday but came back with a vengeance on Sunday. Jesse also ran into some trouble in the dusty fields of the Xilinx but doubled up on Sunday, racing both the Open and the 3s, finding the podium in the latter. Spencer's Saturday was decent, although an ill-advised bridging attempt on JHK's wheel shot his wad. On Sunday, he rode agressive in the main chase group and maintained his reputation as the sketchiest dude in the Open by bobbling the sand pit on the final lap, missing out on his chance to fight for podium.
As we said, it's truly the heart of the season right now, with Interlocken this weekend followed by the incomparable Colorado 'Cross Classic and The Boulder Cup. Enjoy it while it lasts!
